So far we have held two free conferences- our Eco Business day
on
11/12/07 and an Eco Primary Day on 08/02/08. These two days were
non-for-profit and sponsored by a number of local groups and
organisations so that the days were free for all our guests.
Eco Business Day
We presented 3 workshops and 2 guest speakers to an audience
of 100
local business owners, managers and organisations. The day tackled the
environment from a business’ point of view, looking at
financial
cost savings and benefits for a firm. We were able to offer this day
free of charge through donations from The Happy Chef and
DGSB’s
Young Chamber, along with support from Dover and Channel Chambers of
Commerce and Dover District Council. The day was highly successful with
fantastic feedback on top of making a number of contacts, which we will
be able to use in future business.
We strongly feel that environmental issues and concerns
shouldn’t be a burden on business opportunity or success- in
fact
it should be seen as an opportunity. Benefiting the environment
doesn’t just have to be for a PR stunt, but can actually
provide
more efficient business practices, less waste and most importantly for
the small business man: a bigger profit margin through increased
savings and efficiency. All workshops on this day were run by pupil
presenters who ran discussions on energy, water, waste and carbon
saving. CEN and TraidCraft representatives then ran key note speeches
on Renewable energy and FairTrade.
Eco Primary Day
After the success of our previous conference, we set up as a
Young
Enterprise Company and wanted to spread our message to young citizens.
Through sponsorship from Dover Town Council, we were able to present to
89 pupils from 9 local primary schools and 18 members of staff.
This was a highly enjoyable- yet definitely tiring!- event. We
presented a number of presentations and workshops to 90 local primary
school pupils in year 5 from 9 local schools and their teachers,
teaching them all about the environment, habitats, wildlife, simple
things to do and renewable energy. The day finished with a recycled art
challenge whilst the teachers had a seminar all about EcoSchools and
further help with their in-school eco developments. The day was
sponsored by Dover Town Council allowing us to provide transport for
all schools and the day free of charge.
As a school and as sixth form pupils, we know how hard it can
be for
schools to implement EcoSchools into the national curriculum and then
meet the criteria for the EcoSchools awards. This day was therefore all
about providing an introduction to pupils to inspire them about their
local area and help school teachers start up under EcoSchools.
